Carrying On a Racing Legacy with 'No Mercy': The Hagen Crafted Designs Story

Updated: Oct 20, 2023

Drag racing has always been more than just a sport for me; it's a family tradition that's shaped my life in the most incredible ways. Our journey into the thrilling world of racing began with our dad, who kindled our passion for the track even before we could drive.

As far back as I can remember, our family was a constant presence at NHRA nationals. Those weekends spent at the racetrack, the smell of burning rubber, and the roar of powerful engines were etched into our childhood memories. Dad had his own race car for a while, and he didn't just race; he lived and breathed the racing culture. I was there right beside him, soaking up his knowledge, helping in the garage, and sharing the excitement of every race.

It was my dad who sparked the racing flame within me, and I can't thank him enough for that. From a young age, he had me captivated by the intricate world of drag racing, and I couldn't get enough of it. Every trip to the track was a new adventure, and I cherished the moments we spent together, whether he was working on cars or giving me a glimpse into the world of racing.

As time went on, my twin sister, Abbie, and I decided that we didn't just want to be spectators; we wanted to be a part of the action. The moment we got our driver's licenses, we knew where our first stop had to be – the drag strip. We were like kids in a candy store, eager to take on the high school series. The thrill of the racecourse, the camaraderie in the pit area, and the cheers from the crowd – it was a rush like no other.

We started racing in high school with a shared love for speed, and we were hooked. The adrenaline, the competition, and the unity among racers spoke to our hearts. We even had matching Dodge Challengers - a symbol of our shared passion. These cars became more than just vehicles; they were part of our identity, known as 'the family of Challengers' at every race event.

With dedication and practice, we started winning races. I was the first to conquer the high school undefeated champion, a moment that filled me with immense pride. Abbie, however, was the real star. She kept racing even after high school, entering the sportsman and pro classes and earning a place for herself at the track.

While I eventually moved out of state, my family continued to race, and my mother and I began supporting our local drag race team by founding the Pacific Raceways Booster Club. It was an opportunity to blend our love for crafting with our passion for racing, a fusion that eventually gave rise to Hagen Crafted Designs.

Abbie continued her journey on the track, forming friendships with legends and seasoned racers who offered invaluable tips and tricks. These individuals became mentors, and their guidance propelled her to victory. Among them, Al Young stood out.

Al was a revered figure at the track, a repository of racing wisdom and car expertise. He became Abbie's racing guardian angel, offering unwavering support, wisdom, and cheerleading that inspired her on her racing journey. It was a bond that transcended the racecourse and became a friendship.

Tragically, Al Young's life journey took an unexpected turn, leaving a void at the track. He left behind a legacy of beautiful race cars, including the iconic GTX. The Young family, now close friends with ours, faced the difficult task of parting with these cherished cars.

We decided that Abbie had to carry on Al's legacy, and she acquired the beloved GTX. It was a decision that would bring our family even closer to the Young family, particularly to Vicky, Al's wife. The GTX wasn't just a car; it was a bridge that united our families in a way we could have never foreseen. The purchase of the GTX wasn't just about owning a remarkable race car; it was about carrying forward the spirit and camaraderie that Al Young had instilled in our hearts.

Vicky would come to the race track to support Abbie. She became more than a friend; she and her family became part of our family. It was in those moments, in the staging lanes, that a simple yet powerful phrase was born. Vicky would say to Abbie, 'No Mercy,' a mantra that encapsulated a world of meaning. It wasn't just about racing hard; it was about racing with heart, determination, and the enduring legacy of Al Young.

As Hagen Crafted Designs continues to expand its horizons, the 'No Mercy' design tells a story of love, connection, and the triumph that defines the world of racing. It's a tribute to a family that doesn't just race together but crafts together, leaving a lasting imprint on the track and in the hearts of all who bear witness.

In this tale of speed and spirit, love for crafting and racing merge, creating an enduring legacy that continues to inspire. 'No Mercy' is more than just a phrase; it's a symbol of unity, determination, and the love that binds our racing community.
